Mandarine Napoléon is a premium, cognac-based orange liqueur crafted by macerating fresh Sicilian mandarin orange peels and a secret blend of 20 botanicals in high-quality alcohol, which is then blended with aged cognac. Originally custom-blended in the early 1800s for Emperor Napoléon Bonaparte by his physician, Antoine-François de Fourcroy, the recipe was lost and later rediscovered, premiering commercially in 1892. Today, it is distilled at the Distillerie de Biercée in Belgium and owned by De Kuyper Royal Distillers.
Profile Overview
  • Alcohol by Volume (ABV): 38% (76 Proof)
  • Appearance: Warm and bright amber.
  • Flavor Profile: Rich, sweet, and complex. It opens with vibrant mandarin zest and marmalade, leading into woody warmth from the cognac base, and finishes with baking spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
  • How it Compares: Similar to Grand Marnier due to its cognac base, but Mandarine Napoléon has a sweeter, distinctly sharper tangerine profile with heavier herbal and spice notes.
How to Drink It
  • Neat or On the Rocks: Sip it as a digestive or after-dinner drink to appreciate its full complexity.
  • In Cocktails: It is highly favored by bartenders worldwide to upgrade classic recipes. Swap it into a Margarita or a Sidecar to add unprecedented depth. It also pairs exceptionally well with dark spirits like bourbon or scotch.
  • Culinary: Excellent for flambéed desserts, premium baking, or savory citrus glazes
